Mrs. Katherine Roberts Wescott, 94, wife of Dr. Joseph V. Wescott and a resident of Onancock, VA passed away on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, VA. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Born on February 14, 1916 in Nassawadox, VA, Mrs. Wescott was the daughter of the late William Thomas Roberts and Katherine Joynes Roberts. She was a graduate of Maury High School and received a B.S. at Longwood College where she was president of student body, Alpha Sigma Alpha, a member of Chi, and chosen as outstanding Virginian of 1939 for her leadership and contribution to the Longwood Student Body. She was a well known local artist, poet, and author of three books; Salt & Sand, Untie The Ribbons, and Loblolly Harp, all illustrated by the author. She was a past president and honorary member of Ye Accawmacke Garden Club, Poetry Society of Virginia, affiliate of the Academy of American Poets and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of Market Street United Methodist Church.

Other than her husband, Mrs. Wescott is survived by her children, Joseph Roberts Wescott and Katherine (Kay) McFarland Wescott, both of Onancock; grandchildren, Joseph Roberts Wescott, Jr., Stephen Major Wescott, and Robert Carter Mattson (married to Jennifer Hatcher Mattson); great-grandchildren, Luke Hatcher Mattson, Sarah Katherine Mattson, Paige Carter Mattson, Katherine Lauren Wescott and Michaella Lillian Wescott; a nephew, William Thomas Roberts, a niece, Mary Gene (Roberts) Simmons and a sister-in-law, Mrs. William Thomas Roberts, Jr. Other than her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Emma (Roberts) Rogers and Margaret Gene (Roberts) Shrieves and two brothers, William Thomas Roberts, Jr. and George Leonard Roberts.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Market Street United Methodist Church in Onancock on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Chapman officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Holly Cemetery in Onancock.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Market Street United Methodist Church, 75 Market St., Onancock, VA 23417, Hospice and Pallative Care of the Eastern Shore, 165 Market St., Suite #3, Onancock, VA 23417 or to the Onancock Volunteer Fire Company, P.O.
